Garmin Edge 840 Solar, Solar-Charging GPS Cycling Computer with Touchscreen and Buttons, Targeted Adaptive Coaching, Advanced Navigation and More

Items Description

The Garmin Edge 840 Solar is a solar-charging GPS cycling computer designed for road cyclists, gravel riders, and endurance athletes who need reliable navigation and performance data on long rides. It combines a responsive touchscreen with traditional button controls, allowing riders to interact with the device in any condition, including wet weather or while wearing gloves. With a focus on targeted adaptive coaching and advanced navigation, the Edge 840 Solar positions itself as a data-rich companion for structured training and exploration.

Garmin engineered the Edge 840 Solar to address two common challenges for cyclists: battery longevity and data accuracy. The Power Glass solar lens extends ride time by harvesting sunlight, while the multi-band GNSS technology provides precise positioning in challenging environments. The device also includes a built-in incident detection feature that shares the rider's location with emergency contacts, and a GroupTrack compatibility that lets riders monitor the position of friends during group rides. Together, these capabilities form a cycling computer that is suited for both competitive training blocks and multi-day touring.

Key Advantages of the Garmin Edge 840 Solar, Solar-Charging GPS Cycling Computer with Touchscreen and Buttons, Targeted Adaptive Coaching, Advanced Navigation and More

1. Solar Charging for Extended Ride Time

The Power Glass solar lens on the Edge 840 Solar converts sunlight into battery power, giving riders more time between charges. This feature is particularly valuable for ultra-distance events, bikepacking trips, and long training rides where access to a power source is limited.

• Battery Life: Up to 60 hours in battery saver mode and up to 42 hours in typical use with solar charging.
• Rechargeable Battery: Standard USB-C charging provides a full charge in approximately one hour.
• Optimal Conditions: Solar charging is most effective when exposed to direct sunlight of 75,000 lux or higher.
• Efficiency: The solar feature adds up to 18 hours of extra battery life per charge cycle, depending on ride conditions.

2. Targeted Adaptive Coaching

When paired with a compatible heart rate monitor and power meter, the Edge 840 Solar delivers daily suggested workouts that adjust based on the rider's training load, sleep data, and recovery status. This coaching system is designed to help athletes balance intensity and rest, reducing the risk of overtraining.

• Daily Suggestions: Workouts are tailored to current fitness levels and upcoming race calendar.
• Power Guide: Targets wattage zones to keep efforts aligned with the training objective.
• Load Focus: Tracks training load distribution and suggests low, high, or base intensity days.
• Recovery Advice: Uses HRV status and sleep quality to recommend rest periods.

3. Enhanced Positioning Accuracy

The Edge 840 Solar uses multi-band GNSS technology that accesses multiple satellite systems simultaneously, including GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and QZSS. This improves positioning consistency in areas where signals are typically difficult to lock, such as dense forests, deep valleys, and urban canyons.

• Multi-Band GNSS: Faster acquisition and more stable tracking compared to single-band receivers.
• Satellite Support: Compatible with GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and QZSS constellations.
• Advanced Features: Includes SatIQ positioning modes that automatically select the best satellite setting to balance accuracy and battery consumption.
• GroupTrack: When connected to a compatible smartphone, riders can view the live position of up to 20 friends on the map.

4. Advanced Navigation with Touchscreen and Buttons

The Edge 840 Solar offers dual input methods that cover different riding scenarios. The 2.6-inch touchscreen responds quickly for map panning and menu navigation, while the five physical buttons allow confident control during intense efforts or when wearing thick gloves.

• Dual Controls: Buttons for start/stop and lap, plus full touchscreen interaction for data screens and maps.
• Preloaded Maps: Includes global road and trail maps with cycling-specific points of interest.
• Off-Route Guidance: Recalculates routes automatically when the rider deviates from the planned course.
• Navigation Alerts: Provides audible and visual cues for upcoming turns, climbs, and descent warnings based on the route profile.

5. Performance Insights and Safety Features

Beyond navigation and coaching, the Edge 840 Solar serves as a comprehensive performance analytics center. It tracks a wide range of metrics including FTP, VO2 max, and climbing performance, and it includes safety-focused tools that provide added confidence during solo rides.

• VO2 Max: Estimates the rider's maximum oxygen uptake in both moderate and high-intensity activities.
• ClimbPro: Shows real-time climb information, including remaining ascent and gradient for each segment.
• Incident Detection: Sends a message with the rider's location to emergency contacts if an impact is detected.
• Stamina: Estimates remaining energy output capacity in real time to assist pacing decisions.

The Edge 840 Solar is best suited for dedicated cyclists who train with structured plans, tackle long endurance rides, or explore new routes regularly. It integrates with popular platforms like Garmin Connect, Strava, and TrainingPeaks, making it a practical addition for riders who already rely on digital training tools. For those planning multi-day bikepacking trips or competitive events, the solar charging capability provides an advantage that reduces the need to carry external power banks. The Edge 840 Solar delivers a balanced combination of training intelligence, navigation accuracy, and long-lasting power, making it a solid fit for riders who expect more from their bike computer.
